Editing the Farm Documentary

Editing was definitely the hardest part of this project. After shooting most of the interviews, I learned that the microphone I was using was making a crackling sound. This made audio editing a bit of a nightmare as sometimes the person I was interviewing had something interesting to say but it was ruined by large crackles. The audio also had a lot of background noise that I eventually removed much of using Audacity.

There was also the question of what software to use for video editing. I initially started using Adobe and was cutting clips with Prelude but I realized since this video required no special effects, I would do just as well and work faster in iMovie. I also used Final Cut Pro to make title cards to introduce each person. Once background noise had been removed, I had to line up the sound with the video and put in the B Roll footage. I added the music and the end credits and began showing the film to a focus group of sorts - my family. From those showings, I got ideas and figured out issues I had with the video. For instance, the music was too loud in one part.

This film was a lot of work - start to finish and I am excited to finally share it with the people working on the farm! It has been a long time coming!
